HOLIDAYS AND FAMILY

27 Nov 2010

Holidays bring to mind family gatherings and parties filled with good friends and good food. Memories that will last a lifetime and more. Family portraits in the living room, Christmas around the tree hanging keepsake ornaments, a terrific Thanksgiving in your sumptuous dining room. Furniture plays a very important but often overlooked part in our lives especially during these festive occasions.

Were you lucky enough to spend Christmas Eve sharing a story and a comfortable armchair with a grandparent or loved one? A lounger or loveseat can be an important part of your living room set that can provide a perfect setting for a close family gathering or story time by the fireplace. Add a slender accent table to it piece and even Santa Claus will find it a perfect place to enjoy his milk and cookies.

If you have a large family or simply love to play host to large gatherings during the holidays but your living room isn't designed for large pieces of furniture, you can use several small sofas or loveseats strategically arranged throughout the room to allow people to converse and move about while still providing plenty of places to relax and enjoy. Smaller more numerous pieces of furniture also allow you to design more flowing settings in rooms that are not precisely square or are oddly shaped. Low accent tables placed between sets of loveseats or sofas will provide a perfect space to add seasonal decorations and floral arrangements to your entertaining space and will also give you many places to set out food and drink for guests if you do not have a large dining room.

If cooking lavish family feasts and hosting exciting dinner gatherings is more to your liking, choosing the proper dining room furniture is key to a wonderful holiday party. A set that includes a table that not only compliments the shape of your dining room but can expand or contract to accommodate any size guest list is essential. Long tables with extension panels work very well in slender dining rooms and can make them appear much more spacious if the hutches are strategically placed at the ends of the room. Adding a flowing wall mirror over a delicate sideboard can also add the appearance of length to the room. If you have a square space you have much more flexibility to your design capabilities. You could easily accommodate a round, or even an octagonal table perfect for that masterful centerpiece.
